Arthur Boath thought it would be useful to have a webpage filled with useful tip bits that may come in handy to anyone to use some day so I have enclosed them below the first one is related to mobile phones. The second one is an email which was sent to me from Phyllis who has MS I thought this was a useful piece of information as well.
Road deaths in Great Britain 1999 – 2008. (List) (16th Dec 2009).
Strokes/Blood Clots. They now have a fourth indicator the tongue.
There are a few things that can be done
in times of emergencies.
Your mobile phone can actually be a lifesaver or an emergency tool for survival.
Check out the things that you can do with it:
FIRST OF ALL EMERGENCY
The Emergency Number worldwide for Mobile is 112.
If you find yourself out of the coverage area of your mobile; network and there
is an emergency, dial 112 and the mobile will search any existing network to establish
the emergency number for you, and interestingly this number 112 can be dialled even
if the keypad is locked. Try it out.
Some more advice regarding the same the subject as far as I am aware, 112 uses a system called triangulation so they can also pinpoint exactly where you are phoning from.,
I got an email sent to me which I have shown below this and checked this out with Angus Police for validation purposes before publishing it.
The email said:
I know you don't all live in Dorset
but a mobile is a mobile where ever you live I did not know about 112 did you ?.
A bit of useful advice - verified by the Dorset Police .
The number does work from a mobile.
This actually happened to someone's daughter. Lauren was 19 yrs old and in college.
This story takes place over the Christmas/New Year's holiday break.
It was the Saturday before New Year and it was about 1.00pm in the afternoon, and
Lauren was driving to visit a friend, when an UNMARKED police car pulled up
behind her and put its lights on. (Lauren's parents have 4 children of various ages)
and has always told them never to pull over for any unmarked car on the side of
the road), but rather wait until they get to a service station, etc.
So Lauren remembered her parents' advice, and telephoned 112 from her mobile phone.
This connected her to the emergency services she told the dispatcher that there
was an unmarked police car with a flashing blue light on his rooftop behind her
and that she would not pull over right away but wait until she was in a service
station or busy area.
The dispatcher checked to see if there was a police car where she was and there
wasn't and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back-up already
on the way.
Ten minutes later 4 police cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her.
One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind.
They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground...... ..the man was
a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.
I never knew that bit of advice, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you
do not have to pull over for an UNMARKED car.
Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a 'safe' place.
You obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them I.e., put on your
hazard lights) or call 112 like Lauren did.
Too bad the mobile phone companies don't give you this little bit of wonderful information.
So now it's your turn to let your friends know about 112
(112 is an emergency number on your mobile that takes you straight to the police
because 999 does not work if you have no signal) .
This is good information that I did not know!

SECOND THING NOW (STILL ON MOBILE PHONES)!
Have you locked your keys in the car?
Does your car have remote keyless entry?
This may come in handy some day. Good reason to own a mobile phone:
If you lock your keys in the car and the spare keys are at home, call someone at
home on their mobile phone from your mobile phone.
Hold your mobile phone about a foot from your car door and have the person at your
home press the unlock button, holding it near the mobile phone on their end.
Your car will unlock! Saves someone from having to drive your keys to you.
Distance is no object. You could be hundreds of miles away, and if you can
reach someone who has the other 'remote' for your car, you can unlock the doors
(or the boot).
Editor's Note: It works fine! We tried it out and it unlocked our car over a mobile phone!'
*****
THIRD THING (STILL ON MOBILE PHONES)!
Hidden Battery Power.
Imagine your mobile battery runs out. To re-activate it, press the keys *3370#
Your mobile will restart with this reserve and the instrument will show a 50% increase
in battery. This reserve will get charged when you charge your mobile next
time.
*****
FOURTH THING (STILL ON MOBILE PHONES)!
How to disable a STOLEN mobile phone?
Before it gets stolen (like NOW!), first check and record safely your Mobile phone's
SERIAL number. To do this, key in the following digits on your phone: * #
0 6 # A 15 digit code will appear on the screen. This number is unique to your handset.
Write it down and keep it somewhere safe.
When your phone get stolen, you can phone your service provider and give them this
code. They will then be able to block your handset so even if the thief changes
the SIM card, your phone will be totally useless.
You probably won't get your phone back, but at least you know that whoever stole
it can't use/sell it either. If everybody does this, there would be no point
in people stealing mobile phones.
AND ONE MORE POTENTIALLY USEFUL THING TO KNOW . .
ATM - PIN Number Reversal.
If you should ever be forced by a robber
to withdraw money from an ATM machine, you can notify the police by entering your
PIN # in reverse. For example, if your pin number is 1234, then you would
put in 4321. The ATM system recognizes that your PIN number is backwards from
the ATM card you placed in the machine.
The machine will still give you (& the robber) the money you requested, but unknown
to the robber, the police will be immediately alerted, and dispatched to the location
(if you are lucky).
Also, the robbers will only know your PIN backwards, so if they take your card and
try to use it again with the reversed number, the ATM will again alert the police.
This information was recently broadcast on CTV by Crime Stoppers. However it is
seldom used because people just don't know about it.
Please pass this along to everyone. This is the kind of information people
don't mind receiving, so pass it on to your family and friends.
These tips are all very useful and don't forget to use your ICE (In Case of Emergency) number on your mobile phone you can find out more on this by clicking here.

STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that
she was fine (they offered to call paramedics) .she said she had just tripped over
a brick because of her new shoes.
They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit
shaken up, Fay went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening
Fay's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the
hospital - (at 6:00 PM Fay passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had
they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Fay would be with us today.
Some don't die. They end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
It only takes a minute to read this...
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally
reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke
recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3
hours, which is tough.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack
of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when
people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE.
T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently)
(I.e. It is sunny out today.)
R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately
and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue
NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue..
If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an
indication of a stroke.
A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you
can bet that at least one life will be saved.
I have done my part. by putting it on our website.
This is pretty good info. Never even
thought about key cards containing anything other than an access code for the room!
HOTEL KEY CARDS
Ever wonder what is on your magnetic key card?
Answer is:
A. Customer's name
B. Customer's partial home address
C. Hotel room number
D. Check-in date and out dates
E. Customer's credit card number and expiration date!
When you turn them in to the front desk your personal information is there for any
employee to access by simply scanning the card in the hotel scanner. An employee
can take a hand full of cards home and using a scanning device, access the information
onto a laptop computer and go shopping at your expense.
Simply put, hotels do not erase the information on these cards until an employee
reissues the card to the next hotel guest. At that time, the new guest's information
is electronically 'overwritten' on the card and the previous guest's information
is erased in the overwriting process.
But until the card is rewritten for the next guest, it usually is kept in a drawer
at the front desk with YOUR INFORMATION ON IT!
The bottom line is: Keep the cards, take them home with you, or destroy them. NEVER
leave them behind in the room or room wastebasket, and NEVER turn them into the
front desk when you check out of a room. They will not charge you for the card (it's
illegal) and you'll be sure you are not leaving a lot of valuable personal information
on it that could be easily lifted off with any simple scanning device card reader.
For the same reason, if you arrive at the airport and discover you still have the
card key in your pocket, do not toss it in an airport trash basket. Take it home
and destroy it by cutting it up, especially through the electronic information strip!
If you have a small magnet, pass it across the magnetic strip several times. Then
try it in the door, it will not work. It erases everything on the card.

Received from a friend who is in the
insurance property business. It is well worth reading.
This is one of those e-mails that if you don't send it, rest assured someone on
your list will suffer for not reading it. The original message was written by a
lady whose brother and wife learned a hard lesson this past week.
Their house burnt down.. nothing left but ashes. They have good insurance so the
house will be replaced and most of the contents. That is the good news.
However, they were sick when they found out the cause of the fire. The insurance
investigator sifted through the ashes for several hours. He had the cause of the
fire traced to the master bathroom. He asked her sister-in-law what she had plugged
in the bathroom. (Web-editor: Not sure why she would have
a electrical socket in the bathroom in the first place)? She listed the
normal things....curling iron, blow dryer. He kept saying to her, 'No, this
would be something that would disintegrate at high temperatures'. Then her sister-in-law
remembered she had a Glade Plug-In, in the bathroom.
The investigator had one of those 'Aha' moments. He said that was the
cause of the fire. He said he has seen more house fires started with the plug-in
type room fresheners than anything else. He said the
plastic they are made from is THIN. He also said that in every case there was nothing
left to prove that it even existed. When the investigator looked in the wall plug,
the two prongs left from the plug-in were still in there.
Her sister-in-law had one of the plug-ins that had a small night light built in
it. She said she had noticed that the light would dim and then
finally go out. She would walk in to the bathroom a few hours later, and the light
would be back on again. The investigator said that the unit was getting too hot,
and would dim and go out rather than just blow the light bulb. Once it cooled down
it would come back on. That is a warning sign.
The investigator said he personally wouldn't have any type of plug in fragrance
device anywhere in his house. He has seen too many places that have been burned
down due to them.
PLEASE PASS THIS ON TO PEOPLE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK.
NOT ONLY COULD IT SAVE SOMEONE'S HOUSE,
BUT IT COULD SAVE SOMEONE'S LIFE.
(1) The three little words: 'Hold
On, Please...'Saying this, while putting down your phone and walking off ( instead
of hanging-up immediately) would make each telemarketing call so much more time-consuming
that boiler room sales would grind to a halt.
Then when you eventually hear BT 's 'beep-beep-beep' tone, you know it's time to
go back and hang up your handset ..... you have efficiently completed your task.
These three little words could help eliminate telephone soliciting.
*****
(2) Do you ever get those annoying
phone calls with no one on the other end? This is a telemarketing technique
where a machine makes phone calls and record s the time of day when a person answers
the phone. This technique is then used to determine the best time of day for
a 'real' salesperson to call back and get someone at home!
What you can do after answering: If
you notice there is no one there, is
to immediately start hitting your # button on the phone, 6 or 7 times,
as quickly as possible. This confuses the machine that dialled the call
and it kicks your number out of their system. Gosh, what a shame not to have your
name in their system any longer!!!
*****
(3) When you get those 'pre-approved' letters in the mail for everything from
credit cards to 2nd mortgages and similar type junk, do not throw away the return
envelope.
Most of these come with postage-prepaid return envelopes, right?
It costs them more than the regular postage 'IF' and when they are
returned. It costs them nothing if you throw them away! In that case,
why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it in these cool
little, postage-prepaid return envelopes.
Send an advert for your local chimney sweeper to American Express ..
they might need one! Send a pizza coupon to HSBC ... in case their canteen
packs up. You get the idea. If you didn't get anything else that day, then
just send them back their blank application form ... after all, it is their form!
If you want to remain anonymous, just make sure your name isn't on
anything you return. (although I personally feel you'd better let them know
that it is from you so they will KNOW who to stop sending the junk mail to!)
You can even send the envelope back empty if you want to just to keep them guessing!
It still costs them, and it is their envelope after all
.. you are just returning it!!!!
The banks and credit card companies are currently getting a lot of their own junk
back in the post, but folks ..... we need to OVERWHELM them, in order to stop them.
Let's let them know what it's like to get lots of junk mail, and best of
all they're paying for it ... Twice!
Let's help keep Royal Mail busy. Since the Royal Mail are saying that
e-mail is cutting into their business profits, let's help them so they
will not need to increase postage costs again. You get the idea!
If enough people follow these tips, it will work ---- maybe you'll get
very little junk mail anymore.
*****
(4) I have often thought of trying this one out. Do you know the junk mail advertising discount pamphlet that you receive every other day from your local shop saying what discounts you can get Somerfield's for example?
Well if have you ever thought of saving them up until you have a load of them then take them to whatever particular store it relates to and then just throw them all up in the air scattering them all on to their shop floor then you can instruct them to pick them up and dispose of them letting by letting them know that this is what they continue to do to you by sending you all of these for you to dispose of which is why you are basically giving them a touch of their own medicine and passing the work of disposing of them straight back on to them a kind of reverse psychology if you like?
(Not sure how this would go on the litter act though but remember you are in private property and not the street and I thought it would certainly make a point to the store manager so they could inform their distributers to stop you getting anymore)?
16th Dec 2009.
I was doing a little surfing and thought this would be a useful link to use it is a list where you can put in your postcode on their website and it will give you all the accidents that has happened in your postcode area. Hovering over the balloon gives you a date and time when the accident happened or clicking on the balloon sometimes gives you some more extra information. Try it out by clicking here.
